German, US scientists win Nobel prize for work that has helped understand how the brain works
Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel received the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries that enabled optogenetics. The technique uses light to control nerve-cell activity and is being studied for applications including vision restoration and improved cochlear implants.
