Boluarte enacts amnesty law in Peru despite strong criticism from human rights groups

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte enacted a controversial amnesty law on August 13 that grants pardons to military, police, and self-defense personnel accused or convicted of crimes during Peru's internal armed conflict from 1980 to 2000. The law also mandates the release of convicted individuals over 70 years old. Human rights groups and the UN have strongly criticized the measure.
